Not Your Average Mother's Day Gift Guide

Hi friends! Welcome! With Mother's Day coming up in just a couple short weeks (how is it already May?!), I wanted to share some fun ideas for what to get your mom and/or other motherly figures in your life. And who better to ask than my actual mother?

When I first asked my mom to contribute, I had material things in mind like candles and massage gift cards and all that stuff, but in her own words, "Moms just really want to spend quality time with their kids and do something fun".  And so, this gift guide was created to help spark some ideas and hopefully inspire you to get your mama something different this year!

Afternoon Tea

A couple of years ago, we surprised my mom with reservations for afternoon tea at the Mandarin Oriental for her birthday and she loved it! We always had tea parties when my sister and I were little, and this was a fun and unexpected way to celebrate. We aren't even really tea drinkers but we do enjoy champagne and finger sandwiches, so the tea was just the icing on the cake. Even if you don't live near one of the Mandarin Oriental hotels, plenty of hotels host an afternoon tea! Just make sure to make reservations ahead of time as many do require it!

Flower Arranging Class

Flowers are a classic Mother's Day gift, but why not step it up a notch and arrange the bouquets yourself with your mom? It's essentially a sip and paint class except instead of painting, you're making beautiful floral arrangements and spending quality time together. Plus, you'll have a pretty souvenir to take home that will only last a week or so, so you don't have to worry about it taking up space in the attic or looking slightly out of place in your living room. I'm sure your mom has enough of your craft projects collecting dust somewhere. You can usually find these classes by doing a quick Google search for florists near you, or Alice's Table is a great resource for finding their events in your neighborhood!

Winery/Brewery Hopping

If you live in the DMV, you're lucky enough to have plenty of wineries and breweries just a short drive away! All you have to do is convince your dad or underage sibling to DD, and you're all set. Or, you can always find a bus or limousine company that offers public and private tours of wineries! We went to Stone Tower Winery in Leesburg, VA a few years ago and loved it! Between going to Charlottesville, Napa, and Sonoma, I've done my fair share of tastings and can say that the DC area has plenty of amazing options to try.

Drag Brunch

Like flowers, brunch is another Mother's Day staple. If your mom has a good sense of humor and doesn't get offended easily, try out a drag brunch! Here in DC, there are plenty of options including Perry's and Nellie's, but definitely make reservations in advance as they do sell out quickly! If you think a drag show would make you and/or your mom and/or your grandma uncomfortable, then I would probably just stick with traditional brunch and spare yourself any awkwardness.

And If All Else Fails...

Or your mom isn't nearby so spending Mother's Day together isn't an option, here are some foolproof gifts (including my mom's top pick, the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer):

I originally bought this for myself but after borrowing it, my mom is now obsessed with it too! You can get it here and here and change your mom's hair routine forever.

I joke about getting your mom a candle for Mother's Day, but this one is actually the best. I purchased one for my office's white elephant and it was the most "stolen" gift, plus it lasts forever!

Minted makes the cutest custom gifts and this wall art is no exception! My grandma especially loves getting pictures in print instead of just seeing them on Facebook.

Who doesn't love Reese Witherspoon? This book is so cute and even if your mom isn't much of a reader, this will at least make a fun coffee table book!

Wine subscriptions: the gift that keeps on giving! This company is one of the top rated in the industry and you can pair it with a cute wine glass like this one.

I hope this post sparks some ideas for those of you that haven't gotten your mom anything yet! And if you're a better offspring than the rest of us and already have your mom's gift wrapped and ready to go, share what you got her in the comments!

Thanks for reading!

XO,
Katie
